Twilight Check-In Guide 2026: Drop Your Bags the Night Before | Vane

Who doesn’t want some extra ZZZs before an early flight? I know I do because I am not a morning person. The thought of waking up at 3 am to be at the airport at 4 am for a 6 am departure makes me cringe.

But what happens when you need to check your big suitcase in for a long-haul flight, and your flight leaves at 6 am?

We verified the airlines and airports offering Twilight Check-in (Day-Before Bag Drop) for 2026, including Jet2, easyJet, and Emirates.

What is a Twilight Check-in?

A “Twilight Check-in” (also called Day-Before or Overnight Bag Drop) allows you to check in your luggage the evening before your morning flight.

The Benefit: You arrive at the airport the next morning luggage-free and head straight to security. No queuing at desks, no hauling suitcases on the shuttle bus. It is the closest you can get to a “Business Class” experience for free.

Why You Can’t Drop Bags Early in the USA & Canada

While Europe and Asia embrace “Twilight Bag Drops,” travelers in North America are often shocked to learn they cannot check bags until just a few hours before their flight.

The “4-Hour Rule” Most major US and Canadian airlines (including Delta, United, American, and Air Canada) have a strict policy: checked bags are only accepted 4 hours before departure.

  • The Reason: Security logistics. TSA and CATSA screening systems are designed to process bags for active flights. US airports generally do not have the secure, bonded “early baggage storage” systems common in Europe.

  • The Risk: If an airline accepted your bag 12 hours early, it would have to sit in an unsecured area or clog up the active sorting belts, which is a major security violation.

The Exception: Transit Hubs You might get lucky if you are connecting through a major hub like LAX or JFK on the same airline, where they can sometimes hold bags for longer layovers. But for a standard morning flight originating in the US? You will likely have to wait until the counters open at 4:00 AM.

Know Before You Go (The Rules)

  1. Bring Everyone: For most airlines (especially Ryanair and British Airways), all passengers on the booking must be present to drop bags so their passports can be verified.

  2. Check In Online First: You usually must have your boarding pass (digital or printed) before you approach the twilight desk.

  3. No Duty-Free Liquids: Once you drop your bag, you can’t add that bottle of wine you buy at dinner later. Pack your liquids before you drop!
